Douyin a new e-commerce contender
Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok, emerges as an e-commerce contender to Alibaba Group and Jingdong. The short-video platform's expansion into online sales continues to pay off with a GMV growth by 46% year on year (August -23 to July -24). The platform’s live-commerce function where shoppers can enjoy livestreaming while shopping has as many as 3.8 billion daily views!
Douyin has also integrated a marketplace channel just next to its short-video feed, where all the listed products are available. The “traditional” e-commerce platforms are facing a new reality with Gen Z shoppers preferring a more entertained shopping experience.
With its 600 million daily active users, Douyin is an important platform for all Western brands wanting to expand in the Chinese market. However, success requires more than just presence – it demands a robust content strategy and a well-curated content library.
